Blackjack terminology can be confusing before the first hand is even explained. This beginner reference focuses on understanding the language of the game. It is not a set of winning instructions or an assessment of Wabo Singapore’s current services.
Reading the value of a hand
In conventional blackjack, cards from two to ten use their printed values, while jacks, queens and kings count as ten. An ace counts as eleven when that does not make the total exceed 21, and can otherwise count as one.
For example, an ace and a six can total seven or seventeen. It is called a soft seventeen while the ace is counted as eleven. Adding a ten makes the total seventeen with the ace counted as one; the hand is then hard seventeen. These examples explain scoring only, not a recommended playing decision.
Blackjack, 21 and bust
A blackjack usually means an ace with a ten-value card in the initial two cards. A three-card total of 21 is not necessarily paid in the same way. A total above 21 is a bust. The objective is to beat the dealer under the table’s rules, rather than to beat every other player.
A push commonly means a tied main hand for which the stake is returned. Special variants may have additional exceptions, so an explanation should name the relevant ruleset.
Common action labels
- Hit: receive another card.
- Stand: take no further card for that hand.
- Double: increase the stake under the table’s doubling rule, normally with one additional card.
- Split: separate eligible starting cards into two hands, subject to the table’s restrictions and additional stake.
- Surrender: give up a hand for a partial return where that option exists.
These definitions do not say when to choose an action. Broad instructions such as “always stand on 17” are incomplete without distinguishing a hard hand from a soft hand and identifying the game rules.
The dealer follows the table rules
A dealer’s action on soft seventeen can differ between tables. The number of decks, checking procedure for blackjack and treatment of split aces may also vary. A rule displayed for one game should not be assumed to govern another. A provider’s blackjack product overview is useful for identifying formats, but the specific game’s help screen is the place for its complete rules.
Learning without profit claims
A glossary cannot guarantee a win. It also cannot confirm that a named site offers a demo, a bonus, particular payment methods or a safe account. This article makes no such assurance about Wabo. Avoid treating practice results as a forecast of real-money results.
